The main library at the University of Sydney named for Thomas Fisher, its major benefactor. It opened in 1909 in the south-western corner of the Quadrangle. In 1962 it moved to a new building adjacent to Victoria Park, the original reading room being renamed MacLaurin Hall. MacLaurin Hall.

The Quadrangle comprises the Great Hall, MacLaurin Hall, Faculty of Arts office and the Nicholson Museum. MacLaurin Hall was constructed from 1902 to 1904 and was designed by Walter Liberty Vernon. The building is mostly constructed of Sydney sandstone and is unique in the Australian architectural landscape.

When the building we know as Fisher Library today was completed in 1963, the old Fisher Library was remodelled and renamed MacLaurin Hall after Sir Henry Normand MacLaurin, who was the Chancellor of the University of Sydney at the time. MacLaurin Hall was built in the Gothic Revival style to match the Main Building and has a grand cedar roof.
